Days of the Week in Tamil

Many Tamil day names come from the sun, moon and planets, as in several other languages.

The seven days

Friday	வெள்ளிக்கிழமை	vellikkizhamai
Saturday	சனிக்கிழமை	sanikkizhamai

கிழமை (kizhamai) means "day of the week".

The meanings

• ஞாயிறு is the sun.
• திங்கள் is the moon.
• செவ்வாய் is Mars.
• புதன் is Mercury.
• வியாழன் is Jupiter.
• வெள்ளி is Venus, and also the word for silver.
• சனி is Saturn.

Short forms

In speech, people often use shorter forms: ஞாயிறு, திங்கள், செவ்வாய், புதன், வியாழன், வெள்ளி, சனி.

Useful phrases

• இன்று என்ன கிழமை? (indru enna kizhamai?) What day is it today?
• இன்று திங்கட்கிழமை. (indru thingatkizhamai) Today is Monday.
• நாளை (naalai), tomorrow
• நேற்று (naetru), yesterday
• இன்று (indru), today

Many Tamil people mark certain days with special practices. For example, many visit temples on particular days, though customs differ between families and communities.
