The Present Perfect in Spanish: He Hablado
How to form and use the present perfect with haber, the participle and the common irregular participles.
The present perfect links the past to the present.
Formation
Use the present tense of haber plus the past participle:
| Subject | Haber |
|---|---|
| yo | he |
| tú | has |
| él / ella | ha |
| nosotros | hemos |
| vosotros | habéis |
| ellos | han |
Past participle
- -ar verbs: replace with -ado: hablar → hablado
- -er and -ir verbs: replace with -ido: comer → comido, vivir → vivido
Examples:
- He hablado con ella. I have spoken with her.
- Hemos comido ya. We have already eaten.
- ¿Has visto la película? Have you seen the film?
Irregular participles
| Verb | Participle |
|---|---|
| hacer | hecho |
| decir | dicho |
| escribir | escrito |
| ver | visto |
| poner | puesto |
| abrir | abierto |
| volver | vuelto |
| romper | roto |
Never separate haber
Nothing comes between haber and the participle. Pronouns go before haber:
- Lo he hecho. I have done it.
Uses
- Recent past: Esta mañana he desayunado tarde.
- Experience: ¿Alguna vez has estado en México?
- Actions with a link to now: He perdido las llaves.
Regional differences
In much of Spain, the present perfect is used for events in the recent past or "today". In many parts of Latin America, speakers prefer the preterite: Hoy comí temprano.
Time words
