How to Read a Sher Aloud: Pace, Pause and Feeling

Simple tips for reciting a couplet so that its rhythm and meaning come across, whether you read to a friend or record a message.

A sher read well can move people. The way you read matters nearly as much as the words.

Read it silently first

Before you read aloud, read the couplet twice. Understand each word and notice where the thought turns.

Slow down

Poetry rewards a slower pace than everyday speech. Take your time on key words.

Use the pause

Pause between the two lines. The first line sets up, and the second line completes. A short silence gives the listener a moment to anticipate.

Stress the right words

Each couplet has a few key words. Give them a little extra weight. For example, in a line about waiting, stress इंतज़ार (intezaar).

Match your feeling

  • Soft and warm for a loving verse
  • Quiet and slow for a verse about separation
  • Light and playful for a teasing one

Say it twice

In mushaira tradition, a line that lands is repeated. Reading the second line twice can add emphasis.

Pronounce with care

  • Practise the nuqta sounds: ज़, ख़, ग़, फ़, क़.
  • Keep long vowels long.

Voice notes

If you send a voice note on a messaging app, read in a quiet space, hold the phone close and speak clearly. Hearing a verse in someone's voice can feel far more personal than text.

Practise

  • Record yourself and listen back.
  • Read to a friend.
  • Try different speeds.

Tips

  1. Understand before you recite.
  2. Let silence work.
  3. Choose short couplets for voice messages.
