QR Code vs Barcode: What's the Actual Difference?

QR codes and traditional barcodes both exist to let a machine read information faster and more accurately than a human typing it in — but they're built quite differently, and each is genuinely better suited to different jobs.
Traditional barcodes: one dimension of data
A standard barcode (like a UPC code on a grocery product) stores data in a single line of parallel bars of varying width, read in one direction by a scanner sweeping across it. This one-dimensional structure keeps barcodes simple and fast to print and scan, but it limits how much data they can hold — typically just a short numeric code, like a product ID, that's then looked up in a separate database for the actual product details.
QR codes: two dimensions of data
A QR code arranges data in a grid, readable both horizontally and vertically, which dramatically increases how much information can be packed into a similar physical space. Where a barcode might store a 12-digit product number, a QR code can directly store a full web address, a block of text, or structured contact information — no separate database lookup required.

There's no need for the extra data capacity of a QR code when all you need is a 12-digit lookup key.
When QR codes are the better choice
Anywhere the code itself needs to carry the actual information — a link, a Wi-Fi password, a payment reference, a ticket's full details — a QR code's higher data capacity makes it the more practical format, since it doesn't depend on a live database lookup to be useful.
Can one scanner read both?
Yes — most modern scanning apps, including general-purpose QR scanner apps, support both QR codes and common barcode formats, so you don't need separate apps for each. This is convenient for uses that mix both, like a shopping app that reads product barcodes but also scans promotional QR codes.
