How QR Code Payments Work (And Why They're So Popular in India)
How QR-code-based payment systems work technically, and why they've become the dominant way to pay in India and other markets.
QR-based payments have become the default way many people pay for everyday purchases in India and several other markets — replacing cash and card machines at everything from street vendors to large retailers. Here's how the system actually works.
Two types of payment QR codes
Static merchant codes. A fixed QR code — often printed and displayed at a counter — that encodes the merchant's payment identifier. The customer scans it, then manually enters the amount to pay. This is the most common type at small shops and stalls.
Dynamic, transaction-specific codes. Generated fresh for each transaction, often shown on a screen at checkout, with the amount already embedded in the code. The customer just scans and confirms, without typing anything. This is more common at larger retailers and reduces the chance of a customer entering the wrong amount.
What's actually encoded
A payment QR code typically doesn't contain money or account balances directly — it encodes a merchant or transaction identifier that your payment app looks up against the relevant payment network in real time, similar to how a ticket QR code points to a database record rather than containing the ticket itself.
Why QR payments took off so fast in India
- Low infrastructure cost for merchants — a printed QR code costs a fraction of a card payment machine, making it accessible to small vendors who previously operated cash-only.
- Interoperability — systems like India's UPI (Unified Payments Interface) allow a single QR code to be paid from many different banking apps, rather than requiring a specific app tied to a specific bank.
- Speed — a scan-and-confirm payment is often faster than counting cash or processing a card transaction, especially for small daily purchases.
- No card fees for many small transactions, which matters significantly for thin-margin small businesses.
Staying safe with QR payments
- Always double-check the amount before confirming, especially with static codes where you enter it manually — this is the single most common source of payment mistakes.
- Never scan a QR code to "receive" money. A common scam involves asking someone to scan a code to receive a payment or refund — in reality, scanning and confirming a QR code initiates a payment from your account, not to it. Receiving money never requires scanning anything.

- Verify the merchant name shown by your payment app before confirming, since most payment apps display the receiving party's registered name — a mismatch is an immediate red flag.
The bigger picture
QR payments are a good example of the format's core strength — turning something that would otherwise require typed account numbers, card swipes, or app-to-app transfers into a single, near-instant scan, at a cost low enough for even the smallest vendor to adopt.
