The Portuguese Present Tense: Regular Verbs and Key Irregulars
How the three verb groups conjugate in the present, and the irregular verbs you'll use every day.

Meaning of the present
The present covers habits, facts and often the near future:
- Falo português. — I speak Portuguese.
- Trabalho em São Paulo. — I work in São Paulo.
- Amanhã vou ao mercado. — Tomorrow I'm going to the market.
Continuous forms
To say "I am doing", Brazil uses estar + gerund, and Portugal uses estar a + infinitive:
| Brazil | Portugal |
|---|---|
| Estou falando. | Estou a falar. |
| Ela está comendo. | Ela está a comer. |
Sentences
- Eu como arroz todos os dias. — I eat rice every day.
- Você tem um irmão? — Do you have a brother?
- Nós vamos à praia. — We're going to the beach.
- Posso entrar? — May I come in?
- Quero um café, por favor. — I'd like a coffee, please.
Dropping the pronoun
Endings show the person, so Falo already means "I speak". The pronoun is used for emphasis or clarity, especially with você/ele/ela, which share a form.
Tips
- Learn one verb in each group.
- Memorise ir, ter, fazer, poder and querer.
