Telling the Time in Portuguese: Que Horas São?
How to ask and tell the time in Portuguese, the singular-plural quirk with 'é uma hora', and the words for half past and quarter.
Portuguese time expressions follow a neat pattern, with a small quirk for one o'clock.
Asking the time
- Que horas são? — What time is it?
- A que horas...? — At what time...?
- Que horas são agora? — What time is it now?

| 2:00 | São duas horas. |
| 3:00 | São três horas. |
| 12:00 noon | É meio-dia. |
| 12:00 midnight | É meia-noite. |
Only one o'clock, noon and midnight use é (singular). Other hours use são (plural).
Minutes
Add e for minutes past and para (or menos) for minutes to:
| Time | Portuguese |
|---|---|
| 3:10 | São três e dez. |
| 3:15 | São três e quinze / três e um quarto |
| 3:30 | São três e meia. |

| 3:50 | São dez para as quatro. |
Meia means "half" and um quarto means "a quarter".
At what time?
Use à for one o'clock and às for other hours:
- O filme começa às oito. — The film starts at eight.

- A reunião é às nove e meia. — The meeting is at half past nine.
