Printing Sketch Photos: Paper, Resolution and Framing
Practical advice for printing sketch-style pictures at home or at a print shop, with tips on paper, size and colour.
A sketch-style picture looks lovely on paper. A little care with resolution, paper and framing gives a professional result.
Start with a good file
- Use the highest-quality original.
- Save the sketch at full quality.
- Avoid tiny, heavily compressed copies, such as those saved from chat apps.
- Keep the original in case you want a different crop.
Resolution for printing
| Print size | Suggested pixels (at 300 PPI) |
|---|---|
| 4 × 6 in | 1200 × 1800 |
| 5 × 7 in | 1500 × 2100 |
| 8 × 10 in | 2400 × 3000 |
| A4 | about 2480 × 3508 |
Sketch effects are fairly forgiving, since soft lines and textures mask slight softness, but check a test print if the file is small.
Paper choices
| Paper | Look |
|---|---|
| Matte | soft, no glare, suits sketches and drawings |
| Textured or art paper | adds a hand-drawn feel |
| Glossy | vivid colour, but reflective |
| Cream or off-white | warm, traditional look |
Matte or textured paper usually suits sketch-style pictures best.
Home versus print shop
- Home printing: convenient for small sizes and test prints. Use good-quality paper, and choose the right paper type in the printer settings.
- Print shops and online services: better for larger sizes and archival papers. They often offer framing.
Black and white versus colour
- Black and white or pencil-like images depend on smooth greys. Check that the printer reproduces them without a colour tint.
- Colour sketches may print slightly differently from your screen. A test print helps.
Colour differences
Screens glow, and paper reflects, so prints look different from screens. Screens are often brighter. If your print looks dark, brighten the picture a little before printing.
Framing
- Choose a frame that matches the mood: simple black or white for modern, wood for warm.
- Use a mount (mat) to give the picture breathing room.
- Choose standard sizes so frames are easy to find.
- Keep prints out of direct sunlight, which fades ink.
Test first
Print a small version of your picture on ordinary paper first. Check the cropping, tone and detail before printing on good paper.
Storing prints
Store unframed prints flat, in a folder, away from damp and light.
Sharing digitally
If you'd rather not print, the picture can be shared straight from the app.
Tips
- Test print.
- Use matte paper.
- Frame with a mount.
