Buildings and Streets: Sketching Architecture from a Photo
How to photograph buildings and city scenes so they translate into crisp, characterful sketch effects.
Architecture is made of lines, and lines are what sketch effects love. Old houses, bridges and street corners often make some of the most satisfying results.
Why buildings suit sketches
- Clear geometry: straight edges, arches, windows.
- Strong contrast between light and shade.
- Repeated patterns such as windows, tiles and railings.
- Character: worn stone, ornate doors, chimney pots.
Photographing for a sketch
- Stand straight on for a flat front view, or at an angle for depth.
- Keep vertical lines upright. Tilt the phone as little as possible, or straight lines look like they lean.
- Include some sky or street for context and space.
- Look for light and shadow, which give the building form.
- Avoid cars and clutter where you can.
- Take a few shots at different times of day.
Perspective
- A slight angle with the building's corner toward you creates depth.
- Looking up exaggerates height but also makes lines converge.
- A straight-on view gives a flatter, poster-like feel.
Details
Close-ups of windows, doorways, balconies or ironwork make fine studies, with lots of line and texture.
Street scenes
- Narrow streets with converging lines make strong compositions.
- Market stalls and cafés add life, but can be busy.
- People in the frame give scale; respect their privacy.
Effects that suit architecture
| Effect style | Result |
|---|---|
| Fine-line or ink-like | crisp, detailed outlines |
| Pencil-like | soft shading, gentle |
| Charcoal-like | dramatic, moody |
| Colour sketch | lively and warm |
Urban sketching
Many people enjoy drawing city scenes on location, a practice known as urban sketching. Sketch effects give a taste of that look, and may inspire you to try drawing yourself.
Straightening
If lines lean, correct the photo before applying the effect, using a crop or straighten tool.
Gift ideas
A sketched picture of a home, a favourite café or a hometown street makes a thoughtful gift.
Check the result
Look at whether the main lines of the building are clear and whether the sky, if included, is clean. If the picture looks too busy, try cropping to a detail.
