Saving Mobile Data When Uploading Photos
Practical ways to cut the data used by photo uploads and downloads, from resizing before you send to choosing when to sync.
Photos are among the biggest users of mobile data. If your plan has a cap, or coverage is patchy, small changes save a lot.
Where the data goes
- Uploading full-size photos to cloud storage or social media.
- Sending original photos through email or messaging.
- Automatic backups running over mobile data.
- Downloading high-quality images in chats and feeds.
A single 4 MB photo uses as much data as a lot of text messages. Twenty photos take 80 MB.
Simple savings
- Resize before sending. A photo shrunk to about 1200 pixels wide is often 200 to 400 KB rather than several MB.
- Send fewer photos. Choose the best few rather than every shot.
- Back up on Wi-Fi only. Change your backup settings so uploads wait for Wi-Fi.
- Turn off auto-download of media in chat apps when on mobile data.
- Use data saver options in apps that offer them.
- Clear old duplicates, so you don't upload the same photo repeatedly.
How much can you save?
| Photo | Approx. size |
|---|---|
| Original phone photo | 3–6 MB |
| Resized to about 1600 px wide | 300–700 KB |
| Resized to about 1000 px wide | 100–300 KB |
Sizes vary with the photo and quality setting.
Choosing the right size
Ask what the recipient needs. For a chat, a small version is plenty. For a print, keep the original and send it over Wi-Fi.
Compress in batches
When you have many photos to send, compress them together before you upload. It saves data and time.
Set data alerts
Most phones let you set a data warning or limit, so you're notified before you run out.
Watch background use
Some apps upload in the background. Check your phone's data-usage screen to see which apps use the most.
Travel tip
Abroad, roaming data can be costly. Wait for Wi-Fi to upload photos.
Sharing responsibly
Smaller copies also load faster for the recipient, which is helpful if they have a slow connection.
Tips
- Resize before you upload.
- Back up on Wi-Fi.
- Check your data usage occasionally.
