Noise, Grain and Blur: What They Do to Compression
How image noise and detail affect file size, why low-light photos compress badly and how to get smaller files from better shots.
Two photos with the same dimensions can differ hugely in file size. Often the difference is not the scene but the noise.
What image noise is
Noise is random speckle, typically in low-light photos. It happens when the camera boosts its sensitivity to capture enough light, amplifying random errors.
Why noise makes files bigger
Compression works by finding patterns and redundancy. A smooth blue sky is easy to describe compactly. Random noise has no pattern, so the compressor has to store it almost pixel by pixel.
| Photo type | Typical compressibility |
|---|---|
| Smooth sky, plain wall | very compressible |
| Detailed textures such as foliage | moderately compressible |
| Noisy low-light photo | poorly compressible |
| Screenshot with flat colours | very compressible in PNG |
The effect of blur
A blurry area has less fine detail, so it compresses well. But compression can also cause blur: heavy compression smooths detail, blending pixels.
Getting smaller, better files
- Shoot in good light. Less noise means smaller files at the same quality.
- Hold the camera steady. Motion blur wastes pixels.
- Avoid digital zoom, which enlarges noise and softness.
- Use the lower ISO where possible, or use night mode.
- Crop out messy backgrounds that add detail nobody needs.
- Resize down. Reducing dimensions also shrinks noise.
Noise reduction
Some editing tools can reduce noise before compression. This can shrink files but may smooth fine detail. Use it lightly.
Why some photos won't reach a size limit
If you must fit a photo under a strict limit and it's noisy, you may need to:
- Reduce dimensions further.
- Lower quality slightly.
- Choose a better photo.
Plain backgrounds help
For ID-style and product photos, a plain, evenly lit background compresses better and looks cleaner.
Practical example
A daylight photo of a plain wall may compress to a small file, while a night photo of a crowd of the same dimensions can need several times more space for similar quality.
In practice
When you compress in an app, compare the result at 100% zoom, especially in shadows where noise hides.
