JPEG, PNG and WebP Explained: Which Format Should You Use?
A practical comparison of common image file formats — JPEG, PNG and WebP — and when to use each one.
Most people never think about image file format until something goes wrong — a photo that looks unexpectedly large, or a graphic that doesn't upload correctly. Understanding the basic differences helps you pick the right format deliberately.
JPEG: the everyday photo format
JPEG (or JPG) is the most common format for photographs, using lossy compression (as covered in our compression article) to achieve small file sizes with generally minimal visible quality loss at moderate settings. It's the right default for most everyday photos — portraits, landscapes, casual photography — where some compression is an acceptable, often unnoticeable trade-off for a much smaller file.
PNG: better for graphics, screenshots and transparency
PNG uses lossless compression, preserving every pixel of the original exactly — better suited to screenshots, graphics with sharp text or lines, logos, and anything needing a transparent background, none of which JPEG handles well (JPEG doesn't support transparency at all, and its lossy compression can visibly blur sharp text edges).
WebP: a newer, more efficient alternative
WebP is a more modern format, generally achieving smaller file sizes than JPEG or PNG at comparable visual quality, and supporting both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency in one format. It's increasingly well-supported across browsers and platforms, though not universally supported by every older application or device — worth checking compatibility for your specific use case before relying on it exclusively.
A simple decision guide
Photos meant for casual viewing or sharing — JPEG, since the file size savings usually outweigh minor, often invisible quality trade-offs.
Screenshots, graphics with text, or anything needing transparency — PNG, since lossy compression would visibly degrade sharp edges and text.
When smaller file size matters most and compatibility isn't a concern — WebP, for the best size-to-quality ratio among common formats.
Why format choice affects compression results
Applying photo compression settings to an already-lossless PNG screenshot, for example, often produces disappointing results compared to compressing an actual photograph, since PNG wasn't designed around the kind of gradual colour variation that lossy photo compression algorithms are optimised for.
A practical takeaway
Match the format to the content type, not just habit — a photo saved as PNG is usually needlessly large; a screenshot saved as JPEG often looks noticeably worse than it should, especially around text.
