HEIC and HEIF: What They Are and How to Share Them
Why some phones save photos in HEIC, what the format offers, the compatibility issues it can cause and how to convert to JPEG.
If a friend can't open a photo you sent, or a website refuses your upload, the culprit may be HEIC.
What HEIC is
HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a modern image format. HEIC is the common file extension for HEIF images that use HEVC compression. Many iPhones save photos in HEIC by default, and some Android phones can too.
What it offers
- Smaller files than JPEG at similar visual quality. Many sources cite roughly half the size, though results vary.
- Support for more colour depth than standard JPEG.
- Extra features, such as storing several images in one file.
The compatibility problem
HEIC isn't accepted everywhere:
| Situation | Issue |
|---|---|
| Older computers and software | may not open HEIC |
| Some websites and forms | accept only JPG or PNG |
| Some messaging or email use | recipients may not see a preview |
Many phones convert to JPEG automatically when sharing, but not always.
Fixes
- Change the camera setting to save as the more compatible format (often labelled "Most Compatible" or JPEG) if you prefer.
- Convert HEIC files to JPEG before uploading.
- Share via a method that converts automatically.
- Use an app that can open, resize and export in JPEG.
Quality when converting
Converting HEIC to JPEG involves a new compression step. Use a high-quality setting to keep detail, and keep the original HEIC if you want the best quality.
Should you use HEIC?
| If you... | Consider |
|---|---|
| Want to save storage | HEIC |
| Share often with many devices | JPEG for compatibility |
| Upload to forms and portals | JPEG |
| Edit in older software | JPEG |
Batch conversion
If you have many HEIC photos to convert, batch tools save time. Choose a JPEG output and a sensible quality, then check a few results.
Name and extension
After converting, the file will end in .jpg or .jpeg. Make sure the extension matches the actual format, since renaming a file doesn't convert it.
Tip
Before an important upload, test the file on the portal, or open it on another device to be sure it works.
