Typing Faster on a Phone: Habits That Save Time
Practical tips to type quicker and with fewer errors on a touchscreen, from keyboard settings to text shortcuts.
Phones weren't built for long typing, but with a few adjustments you can write far more comfortably.
Get the keyboard right
- Choose a keyboard you like. Try a couple and see which feels natural.
- Adjust the size. Many keyboards let you make the keys larger or smaller.
- Try one-handed mode, if offered, for when you're on the move.
- Turn on haptic or sound feedback if it helps you feel each key.
Use gestures and predictions
- Swipe typing: drag your finger over the letters to form a word.
- Word suggestions: tap a suggested word instead of typing it all.
- Long-press a key for accents and symbols.
Predictions save time on common words but can insert wrong ones, so check before you send or save.
Text shortcuts
Many keyboards let you save shortcuts that expand into longer text, such as an address, phrase or signature. Use them for text you type often.
Learn the layout
- Symbols and numbers: find the symbol layer and learn where common characters live: quotes, brackets, hyphens.
- Punctuation: some keyboards add a full stop if you tap the space bar twice.
Reduce errors
- Type slowly at first. Accuracy builds speed.
- Watch the screen, not your fingers.
- Fix errors as you go in short notes; for long drafts, fix later.
- Learn common autocorrect slips, and adjust.
Use both thumbs
Many people find two-thumb typing faster than using one finger. Hold the phone in two hands with a relaxed grip.
Consider alternatives
- Voice typing. Speaking can be faster for drafts, especially for first-pass notes.
- A Bluetooth keyboard. For long sessions, a small external keyboard is much faster.
Rest your hands
- Take short breaks.
- Stretch your fingers and wrists.
- Avoid long, tense typing sessions.
Practise
Speed improves with regular use. Keeping a daily note or journal is a good way to practise without pressure.
