What Is a Lumen? Understanding How Bright a Light Really Is
A plain-English guide to lumens, lux and beam distance, and what they mean when you compare a phone flashlight with a dedicated torch.
Torch boxes are full of numbers. The most common is the lumen, and it's worth knowing what it does and doesn't tell you.
Lumens: total light output
A lumen measures the total amount of visible light a source gives off in all directions. More lumens means more light overall. A candle gives off very little light in lumen terms, a typical household bulb several hundred lumens, and dedicated torches range from a few lumens to thousands.
Lux: light that lands on a surface
Lux measures how much light actually reaches a surface. The same lumens spread over a large area give fewer lux than the same lumens focused on a small spot. This is why two lights with equal lumens can look very different: one is a wide floodlight, the other a narrow spotlight.
Beam shape matters
| Beam | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Flood | wide, soft, even light | close work, lighting a room |
| Spot | narrow, intense beam | seeing far, picking out distant objects |
A phone's camera flash is a small, fairly wide LED, so it lights the area in front of you well but doesn't throw a beam very far. Dedicated torches use reflectors and lenses to focus light.
Why more isn't always better
- Glare: a very bright light in a dark room can dazzle you and make details harder to see.
- Battery drain: more output uses more power.
- Comfort: in the dark, your eyes adjust, and a gentler light is often easier to work with.
Phone versus dedicated torch
A phone flashlight is convenient and good for everyday tasks: finding keys, reading a label, lighting a path close by. A dedicated torch is better if you need long-distance beams, waterproofing or long runtimes.
What to check when buying a torch
- Lumens for overall brightness.
- Beam distance, often given in metres.
- Runtime at each setting.
- Battery type and whether it's rechargeable.
- Water resistance, if you'll use it outdoors.
For everyday use
For most home tasks, a phone flashlight is bright enough, and an app that opens quickly with one tap is often more useful than more lumens.
