Torch, Headlamp or Lantern: Choosing the Right Light
How handheld torches, headlamps and lanterns differ, and which to choose for home, camping and emergencies.
Three kinds of portable light cover most needs. Each is best at something different.
The torch (flashlight)
A torch is a handheld light with a focused beam.
Strengths:
- Directional: light goes where you point it.
- Can reach far with a focused beam.
- Small and easy to keep in a drawer, bag or car.
Weaknesses:
- Needs one hand.
- Lights a narrow area.
Best for: finding things, walking outdoors, checking noises, quick tasks.
The headlamp
A headlamp straps to your head, so the light follows your gaze.
Strengths:
- Hands-free: essential for cooking, repairs or scrambling over rocks.
- Light goes where you look.
Weaknesses:
- Can dazzle others when you face them.
- Can feel heavy on long use.
Best for: camping, working with tools, walking or running at night.
The lantern
A lantern gives wide, all-around light, like a small lamp.
Strengths:
- Lights a whole room or campsite.
- Can be stood on a table or hung from a hook.
- Gentle light is comfortable for long use.
Weaknesses:
- Doesn't reach far.
- Bulkier than a torch.
Best for: power cuts, family evenings, tents.
Comparison
| Need | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Quick look around | torch |

| Reading in a tent | lantern or headlamp |
Where the phone fits
A phone flashlight acts as a small torch. It's always with you, which is its main advantage. It is less suitable for hands-free work or wide-area light, but it's ideal for quick everyday tasks.
A sensible home kit
- A small torch for each floor.
- A lantern for power cuts.
- A headlamp if you do repairs or outdoor activities.
- Spare batteries or a charger.
