Classic Love Stories and What They Still Teach Us
From Romeo and Juliet to Layla and Majnun and Heer Ranjha, a look at enduring love stories from different cultures and the lessons people take from them.
Love stories last because the feelings in them feel familiar, even when the setting is centuries old. Here are some classics from around the world.
Romeo and Juliet
William Shakespeare's play, written in the 1590s, tells of two young people from feuding families in Verona. Its themes include the power of love, the pain of family conflict and the danger of rash decisions.
Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen's novel (1813) follows Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy. First impressions mislead both of them, and they need to overcome pride and prejudice before they can understand each other. It is a story about listening and learning.
Layla and Majnun
This tale from Arabic tradition became famous in the Persian poet Nizami's twelfth-century version. Majnun ("madman") is driven to distraction by his love for Layla. The story has been retold in many languages.
Heer Ranjha
A Punjabi love story, best known through the poet Waris Shah's eighteenth-century version. Heer and Ranjha love each other, but family and society keep them apart.
Tristan and Isolde
A medieval European legend of a knight and a princess whose love clashes with duty. It inspired many poems and operas.
The Taj Mahal
Not a story on paper, but a monument: the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had the Taj Mahal built in Agra as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is often called a monument to love.
What the stories share
| Theme | Example |
|---|---|
| Obstacles | family feuds, social barriers |
| Misunderstanding | pride and first impressions |
| Devotion | loyalty despite hardship |
| Sacrifice | giving something up for love |
Lessons for today
Many of these stories show what can go wrong: poor communication, pride and secrecy. Readers often take from them the value of honest talk, patience and understanding.
