Present, Future and Continuous in Kannada: One Form, Two Meanings

How Kannada uses one non-past verb form for habits and future plans, and a separate continuous form for actions happening now.

English keeps present and future apart. Kannada often uses a single verb form for both, and lets context show which is meant.

The non-past form

The form ending in -ತ್ತೇನೆ (for "I") covers habits, general facts and future plans:

Subject Verb: ಮಾಡು (do)
ನಾನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ
ನೀನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೀಯ
ನೀವು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೀರಿ
ಅವನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ
ಅವಳು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ
ನಾವು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇವೆ
ಅವರು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ

Habit or future?

Time words decide:

  • ನಾನು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಓದುತ್ತೇನೆ. — I read every day. (habit)
  • ನಾನು ನಾಳೆ ಓದುತ್ತೇನೆ. — I will read tomorrow. (future)
  • ಸೂರ್ಯ ಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಉದಯಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. — The sun rises in the east. (general fact)

The continuous form

For an action happening now, use the form with -ತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ (for "I"):

Subject Verb: ಮಾಡು (do)
ನಾನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ
ನೀನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀಯ
ನೀವು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರಿ
ಅವನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ
ಅವಳು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ
ನಾವು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ
ಅವರು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ

Examples:

  • ನಾನು ಊಟ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. — I am eating.
  • ಅವಳು ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. — She is reading.
  • ಮಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ. — It is raining.

I am going (now) ನಾನು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ.
