Having, Needing and Liking in Kannada

How Kannada expresses possession, need and preference using ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರ, ನನಗೆ ಬೇಕು and ನನಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟ.

Kannada has no single verb for "have". It uses location, and the person who needs or likes something takes the -ಗೆ ending, as if the thing comes to them.

To have

Use ಹತ್ತಿರ (near, with) or the possessive:

  • ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಇದೆ. — I have a book. (literally "Near me a book is")
  • ಅವನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕಾರು ಇದೆ. — He has a car.
  • ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಹಣ ಇಲ್ಲ. — I don't have money.

To need or want: ಬೇಕು

ಬೇಕು (bēku) means "is needed" or "wanted". The person takes -ಗೆ:

  • ನನಗೆ ನೀರು ಬೇಕು. — I need water.
  • ನಿಮಗೆ ಏನು ಬೇಕು? — What do you need?
  • ಅವನಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಬೇಕು. — He needs help.

Notice the pronoun forms: ನನಗೆ (to me), ನಿನಗೆ (to you), ನಿಮಗೆ (to you, respectful), ಅವನಿಗೆ (to him), ಅವಳಿಗೆ (to her), ನಮಗೆ (to us), ಅವರಿಗೆ (to them).

To like: ಇಷ್ಟ

ಇಷ್ಟ (iṣṭa) means "liking":

  • ನನಗೆ ಕಾಫಿ ಇಷ್ಟ. — I like coffee.
  • ನನಗೆ ಸಂಗೀತ ಇಷ್ಟ. — I like music.
  • ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಇಷ್ಟ. — She likes books.

To know: ಗೊತ್ತು

ಗೊತ್ತು (gottu) means "known":

  • ನನಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಗೊತ್ತು. — I know Kannada.
  • ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. — I don't know.
