Saying 'Not' in Gujarati: નથી and ના
How Gujarati forms negatives with નથી, ન and ના, with examples in the present, past and future, plus negative commands and useful negative words.
Negation in Gujarati is simple once you know the words. Position matters, and verbs use different forms depending on tense.
Present negative: નથી
To make a present negative, replace છે with નથી:
- હું ઘરમાં છું. → હું ઘરમાં નથી. — I'm not in the house.
- તે શિક્ષક છે. → તે શિક્ષક નથી. — He's not a teacher.
- અમે અહીં છીએ. → અમે અહીં નથી. — We're not here.
For a verb in the present continuous, replace the helper with નથી:
- હું જાઉં છું. → હું જતો નથી (male) / હું જતી નથી (female) — I don't go.
- તે લખે છે. → તે લખતો નથી. — He doesn't write.
- અમે ખાતા નથી. — We don't eat.
નથી doesn't change with person.
