Gujarati Adjectives and Making Comparisons
Useful Gujarati adjectives, how they agree with nouns, and how to say 'bigger than', 'the biggest' and 'as big as' using કરતાં and સૌથી.
Adjectives describe the world, and comparisons let you say what's better, cheaper or bigger. Both are easy in Gujarati once you know a few patterns.

Adjectives ending in -ું are shown in the neuter form. They become -ો (masculine) and -ી (feminine): સારો છોકરો, સારી છોકરી, સારું બાળક.
Agreement
Adjectives that end in a vowel sign change to match the noun. Adjectives that end in a consonant, like સુંદર, ગરમ and હોશિયાર (clever), don't change.
Position
The adjective comes before the noun: મોટું ઘર (big house). After the verb "to be", it follows the noun: ઘર મોટું છે. (The house is big.)
Intensifiers
- ખૂબ — very: ખૂબ સારું
- બહુ — very, a lot: બહુ મોંઘું
- થોડું — a little: થોડું ઠંડું
- એકદમ — completely: એકદમ સરસ
- સાવ — totally
Comparing: "than" with કરતાં
The word કરતાં (kartaa) means "than" and follows the thing being compared:
- આ ઘર પેલા ઘર કરતાં મોટું છે. — This house is bigger than that house.
- તે મારા કરતાં ઊંચો છે. — He's taller than me.
- ગુજરાતી હિન્દી કરતાં અઘરી છે. — Gujarati is harder than Hindi.
Use વધુ (more) or ઓછું (less) when needed: આ વધુ મોંઘું છે. — This is more expensive.
The superlative: સૌથી
સૌથી means "most" or "the...est":
- તે સૌથી ઊંચો છોકરો છે. — He's the tallest boy.
- આ સૌથી સારું ઘર છે. — This is the best house.
- અમદાવાદ ગુજરાતનું સૌથી મોટું શહેર છે. — Ahmedabad is the biggest city in Gujarat.
Better and best
- સારું → વધુ સારું → સૌથી સારું (good, better, best)
- બહેતર — better (formal)
- ઉત્તમ — best, excellent
As... as
Use જેટલું ... તેટલું ("as much as") for equality, and જેવું (like): તે મારા જેટલો ઊંચો છે. — He's as tall as me.
Adverbs
Many adjectives can serve as adverbs without change: ધીમું (slow) → ધીમે (slowly): ધીમે બોલો. — Speak slowly.
